Sensation of desire
“We treat desire as a problem to be solved, address what desire is for and focus on that something and how to acquire it rather than on the nature and the sensation of desire, though often it is the desire between us and the object of desire that fills the space in between with the blue of longing.”Rebecca Solnit from A Field Guide to Getting Lost
Good book so far. This particular idea – of focusing on (and appreciating) desire itself rather than its object – has had me thinking. This morning as I listened to Jake Xerxes Fussell on The Roadhouse and was introduced to The Bitter Southerner whilst remembering to look again at the Oxford American I realised I need some kind of guideline for looking at new things.
There are so many incredible things in the world that I will never encounter. That’s OK. I won’t spend my life searching for them and missing the great stuff under my feet. The desire to know all the greatness in the world is actually quite thrilling in and of itself. Stay open and pay attention when things organically come your way.
